On 28 February 1918, the United States Military was actively engaged in World War I (1914–1918). After declaring war on Germany on 6 April 1917, the U.S. began mobilizing forces and sending troops to Europe under the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), commanded by General John J. Pershing.

Locations of U.S. Military on 28 February 1918:

  1. France – The AEF had established a significant presence in France, where U.S. troops were training, supporting Allied forces, and preparing for large-scale combat operations. Some American units had already been involved in limited engagements alongside French and British forces.
  2. Western Front – While not yet involved in major battles, American forces were stationed along the Western Front and beginning to take over sectors from French and British forces.
  3. Home Front (United States) – Large-scale training camps were operating across the U.S., preparing more troops for deployment.
  4. Naval Operations (Atlantic Ocean & European Waters) – The U.S. Navy was escorting convoys across the Atlantic to protect against German U-boats and supporting the British Royal Navy in anti-submarine warfare.
  5. Italy – A small U.S. military presence, including medical units and air support, was assisting Allied forces on the Italian Front.

By early 1918, U.S. forces were rapidly increasing in number, and within months, they would play a decisive role in major offensives, such as the Second Battle of the Marne (July 1918) and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (September–November 1918), which contributed to Germany’s defeat.
